This is my mentor and friend, Ann Hopkins. She is affectionately known as “Granny Annie” or even more commonly, “Art with Ann”.

For over 25 years she has taught art in many media to the youth (and their parents) of our community. I met Ann, in 2001, shortly after moving to Camano Island. I was in Stanwood for the afternoon, volunteering to read to ECAP kids. Since I was early, and had my four year old son with me, I walked with him over to the craft store.

When she spied me, she started up a conversation (something she does all the time with strangers…she’s one of those gregarious people who loves everyone!), when she said she was a spinner, I perked up. “WOW! I have always wanted to spin yarn!”
“I’ll teach you.” She said, almost a directive than an offer.

She gave me her card, and I spent a month wondering if she really meant it. Finally, I called her, and she invited Yousif (my son) and I over to her house to give me my first lesson.

She showed me many more of her art projects, jewlery, quilting, watercolors, appliques, stenciling, pen and ink, her poetry… I was in awe…”I’ve always wanted to be creative like you, I just don’t have a creative bone in my body…” I said.

She looked at me over the rims of her glasses, harrumphed, and said “We’ll see about that…” All the time giving me a wry smile…

Well, it appears I do have one or two creative bones in my body. Thanks to Ann, I now know where they are and how to use them.

I will forever be in her debt for opening my world…and to my Seventh Grade Art teacher who told me I’d never be an artist…all I have to say is, “In your face!”

Camano-Stanwood Ungroup Spinners At Cama Beach

Posted by camanomade on June 24, 2008

Here is a collage of photos of our brilliant day down at Cama Beach State Park.

We had a wonderful day, spinning showing the public what we do as fiber artists. We had crochet, drop spindling, handspinning (wheels), knitting, and much more demonstrated on the day.

We had the best seat in the house, right in front of the South End String Band, making the spinning go even faster as we treadled to the sounds of fiddles and old timey jug band music!

Somedays I just want to scream….

Posted by camanomade on June 20, 2008

So, I worked until just two minutes ago (2:54am PDT) on my late newsletter. I finished two articles and formatting a photo pictorial. Ask me, did I save? No. I did not. Am I really that stupid?…obviously.

For someone who has been using computers since they were Commodore 64s (actually before those), I KNOW BETTER…but NO! I was so happy to be done, I went to upload and WHAT HAPPENED???!!!!it froze…and I had to close the program…I knew it the moment I hit publish…Grrrr…

I’m going to bed.

BTW: I was formatting the photo tutorial for this stitch for the newsletter…It’s called a Trellis stitch, you work it over a ruler. Sigh…I’ll do this again today, after some sleep and I WILL remember to save as I’m working…sniffle…whimper…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….

The Last Hurrah…

Posted by camanomade on June 18, 2008

by Bec ThomasMy friend Bec Thomas (of visual perpective) took this photo of Deb (another park ranger’s wife) and I, during the Cama Beach Staff’s last hurrah, Monday June 16th. It was the last staff party with the park closed.

For me it was a bitter sweet time, as my family and I lived down there for almost three years. We arrived when my daughter was 7 and my son was 4, she is now 14 and he just turned 12 (Monday!).  As everyone talked about the park opening, I had visions of my children running up deer trails, stumbling on paths, scraping knees, climbing into holes with archaeologists, jumping up on giant dirt “mountain” and sliding down it (even when told repeatedly to stop…dirt ground into underwear THROUGH the clothes!). Visions of my daughter and son bringing me their treasures, running terrified off the beach from an errant sea lion, watching a pumpkin flung from a homemade trechuchet be taken down to Davy Jones locker, by what we assumed was a seal, but who knows…

Eagles, orcas, friendships, people who passed through our lives, people who are still there…my friend Bec’s boys were so little when we met, her oldest was my son’s “Almost seven year old” friend when we met…her youngest was a baby, he’s seven now.

So as we get ready to celebrate the opening of the park…I had to detach, to let go, of the park, it was my home once, it holds the imprints of my children’s laughter, and their tears, the garden that provided so many people with joy has changed, and will change again, and new memories for other people will imprint the park…other children’s laughter, other children’s tears…

It makes it easier to let go of our private nirvanah…knowing that come Saturday, grandparents will bring grandchildren to share their memories, and create new ones. It’s easy to want to hang on to things, because those days slip by so quickly, without us even noticing…yet, a place like Cama Beach belongs to us all…

As I stood watching the children play unfettered one last time in “our” park, I thought back to the thousands of years that we know Cama has been used by human beings…I thought of how many voices we could hear on the wind if we just but listened.

The one thing I do know from living there, is that it is magical, it is healing…and it is there for us all. I can detatch knowing that.

As for crocheting…I finally got that stitch figured out…photo coming soon ;)

Finally found the stitch…photos coming soon…

Posted by camanomade on June 13, 2008

So, I’ve been in a funk. If you noticed I haven’t written much, and truth be told I have been busy, at home, with kids etc, especially with hubby working like a mad man in the time leading up to the Grand Opening of Cama Beach State Park… It’s been a long two months.

Lately the funk is lifting, which I have to say is a good thing. Cause, well…it was getting FREAKING old.

So, part of my getting out of it was playing with yarn, and trying to learn broomstick lace (no I have not mastered this yet, but no worries, I shall INDEED conquer this too)… I figured out hairpin lace tonight, not because I couldn’t before due to lack of ability, nope I finally found some looms :) So all of this was helping me…

Now for a long time I have wanted to do a certain stitch, it’s a real trellis, which most people don’t call a trellis, but that’s the old name for it, and it looks KIND of  like hairpin lace, but it’s not hairpin lace, it’s regular crochet but you can work the loops over a ruler…that will be my newsletter’s stitch of the month when I finally use the right yarn for it…

Note to self…Don’t use handspun singles for this stitch…yes use a balanced yarn…Cause um…well I should just take a pic of my first attempt and you’ll see why…BUT it is indeed very cool…and I’ve wanted to do this for five years now, but couldn’t find the directions anywhere…

My dear friend Ann, yes that Ann, the one who got me spinning, and needle felting, yeah that woman…she lent me her old reader’s digest Needlework book…and well…I’m in hog heaven…Published before a bunch of nimrods decided there were things you could and couldn’t do with crochet.

Photos coming soon….

Cama Beach, Yarn, Music and More…

Posted by camanomade on June 10, 2008

I got this sent to me in my email from a friend…and well since they said to forward it out, I’m going to take the liberty of amusing you with the words of Skeeter Daddle (missionary of the South End String Band, aka Jack Archibald, who is also a brilliant stained glass artist, and humorist)

“Date: Saturday, June 7, 2008, 10:46 AM

CAMA BEACH STATE PARK GRAND OPENING

In case you have been institutionalized or just reverted to living under
a beach rock, you probably know already that Saturday, June 21st, the
biggest event to hit Camano Island is going to roll in on us like a swimming
pool tsunami. Oh yeah, we're talking about the grand opening of the Cama
Beach State Park, only about a decade in the making, but finally here once
and for all.

And of course you know, unless you've been diagnosed with chronic
xenophobia or else you live too far south down the island, the South End
String Band will be playing as the Island House Band. We've graciously
invited the Governor, the legislature, the tribes, the whole state, in fact,
to come down and listen to us play, hoot and holler for the celebratory
kick-off to the latest, greatest park to come down the pike since South End
Park, the 5 acre jewel in the crown of the island's park system. No
offense to Cama or Camano State Park.

     So . since we're a bipartisan, non-discriminatory fiddle band,
we're also inviting YOU. We'll be playing music from our new
CD, shamelessly titled CABIN FEVER with the coincidental artwork of the
iconic Cama Beach cabins on the cover. And we're going to be selling that
little marketing masterpiece to every poor soul struck dumb by the awe and
majesty of the park who strolls by the soundstage. We may even change our
name. Cama Beach Park Band. Sounds kinda nice, don't it?

Come on down and buy us. Hear us, I mean. We're playing 12 to 2, then
we're letting the politicians make their speeches, after which, we wake
back up and kick back in from 4 to 6. It's going to be the event of the decade
on Camano so don't let this party pass you by. Plan on carpooling, plan on
coming in by boat, plan on canceling conflicting events, plan on being a
part of history. Check the park's website for more pertinent information.
(We said it would be okay if they posted something too...)www.parks.wa.gov

If you know anyone who IS living under a rock, please forward this to
them in hopes their lives will become as full as all ours. It's the decent
thing to do.
thanks, skeeter daddle, missionary for the band"

The photos are mine...I'm not the best photographer in the world, but I decided to take some fun photos of the last days
before the park is open to the world ;)
Come on down if you can, if you are a spinner come on and sit with us, we're having a mini spin in, and handworking demonstrations...hopefully it won't rain,
but I'm not going to promise sun... I will promise a canopy, and shelter, and a good time!
And I can spin again slowly, but surely...so all you folks waiting on yarn, I'm spinning as fast as I'm allowed to go :)
